Campaign Update - Week of 12/31/2007

A time for reflection
The Justice for Reggie Campaign would like to thank those of you who helped gather signatures, attended events, passed these campaign updates to your contact list, passed out fact sheets or who in general just kept Reggie’s case on the front burner.

Since the unjust execution of Marlin Gray in October 2005, there have been no executions in Missouri. All executions are on hold in the country since the US Supreme Court agreed to hear the Blaze case.

Other good news as a result of a national unified effort is the abolition of the death penalty in New Jersey and the final burial of the death machine in New York where it has been ruled unconstitutionally. Additionally, the number of executions this year are the lowest in a decade. Juries have become reluctant to give the death penalty in the face of mounting false convictions. The total number of post-conviction DNA exonerations now stands at 210.

In the coming weeks, we need you to:

1. Give us three names and contact information of people you want to know about Reggie’s struggle for justice. Agree to talk with 5 people regularly about the case and ask them to talk about the case to 5 others and so on.

2. Join us at Lobby Day in the State Capitol on February 20. A bus will leave from St. Louis that morning and return in the evening. Details are being finalized.

3. Complete a petition sheet by January 31 as part of the clemency package being prepared by Reggie’s legal team.

4. Help us mail out the annual newsletter on Monday, January 14 at 7 pm, Rowan Center, 1401 Rowan Avenue.

5. Not let any state or federal candidate stand in front of you without asking what are they doing to abolish the death penalty

May you and your family enjoy a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

“Enough Already!”

Barbara Becnel, a long-time supporter of Stan “Tookie” Williams was in town from Los Angeles,CA and came to give remarks of solidarity. She also pointed out the many similarities between the Williams and Clemons cases. After remarks from Williams and a performance by Billie Neal, supporters went on the bridge for a moment of reflection.
